How many guesses each opener needed to solve 10,000 randomly drawn Wordle secrets. All four openers solved every game within 6 guesses. Most games resolve in 3 guesses.

How we tested

We scored every word in the Wordineer guess dictionary (715 five-letter words) against our 642-word answer pool using Shannon entropy: for each candidate guess, we computed what color pattern it would produce against every possible answer, grouped answers by pattern, and scored the guess by how evenly it split the pool. Higher entropy = better guess.

We then simulated 10,000 games: a random opener (Python's random.Random(42), seed 42), followed by always playing the highest-entropy suggestion, until solved or 6 guesses exceeded. Secrets were drawn uniformly from the 642-word answer pool — not the actual NYT sequence, which isn't public.

Important limitation: Our word lists are Wordineer's curated sets, not the exact NYT lists. The NYT Wordle answer pool is not public and changes over time. Our rankings reflect our own data and will differ from analyzes that use other word lists. Full methodology and Python source code: see cite box below.

Is SLATE or CRANE better as a Wordle starting word?
By Shannon entropy against our answer pool, SLATE (5.949 bits, #2) beats CRANE (5.595 bits, #6). But in our 10,000-game benchmark, the practical difference is tiny — SLATE averaged 3.02 guesses and CRANE averaged 3.03. Both are excellent. Our top-ranked opener is TRACE at 5.989 bits.
Why do Wordle solver rankings differ between sites?
Every solver uses a different word list and scoring method. The NYT hasn't published its exact answer pool, so every analysis uses its own curated list. Rankings diverge based on word list size, whether frequency weighting is applied, and when the list was last updated. Our analysis is transparent: 642 answer candidates, 715 guess words, equal-probability Shannon entropy, Python source available.
What does Shannon entropy mean for Wordle?
Shannon entropy measures how much information a guess gives you on average. A starting word with 5.9 bits of entropy splits the remaining answer pool into more evenly sized groups than one with 5.5 bits — meaning you learn more from the result regardless of which color pattern comes back. Higher entropy = better starting word.
