A word counter is a simple but indispensable writing utility. You paste your text in, and the tool breaks it down into a set of metrics you'd otherwise have to calculate yourself: word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, reading time, and more. Writers have needed these numbers for as long as writing has had requirements attached to it — from essay word limits in school to character caps on social platforms to minimum length targets from editors and content managers.
This particular word counter goes beyond the basics. Instead of just handing you a word count, it shows you how your text performs: how long it takes to read aloud, how easy it is to understand, and whether it fits the character limits of every major social media platform. All of that happens instantly, in your browser, without an account or a loading screen.
Here's what each metric means and why it's useful:
Words — Every whitespace-separated token counts as one word. This matches how Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and most academic platforms count words. Hyphenated compounds like "well-known" count as one word. "Word counter" counts as two.
Characters (with spaces) — The total length of your text, including every space. This is the number that matters for platforms that count all characters, not just letters.
Characters (without spaces) — The pure content length with spaces stripped out. Used in translation pricing (translators are often paid per character, not per word), typesetting, and some ad specifications.
Sentences — Split on terminal punctuation: periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. Useful for spotting monotony. If all your sentences are a similar length, the writing can feel robotic. A mix of short and long sentences is generally more engaging.
Paragraphs — Split on blank lines. A high paragraph count alongside a low word count means short, punchy writing — fine for landing pages, not typical for essays. A low paragraph count with high word count means long blocks of text, which can be difficult to scan.
Unique words — How many distinct words appear in your text, versus the total word count. A low unique-to-total ratio can signal repetitive writing. This isn't always bad — technical writing often repeats key terms deliberately — but for general prose, variety tends to be more engaging.
Average words per sentence — Aim for 15–20 for general audiences. Academic writing typically runs higher. Conversational writing and blog posts usually run lower. If your average pushes above 25, scan for sentences that could reasonably split into two.
Estimated pages — Calculated at 250 words per page, the standard assumption used by most publishers and academic institutions. This is double-spaced, 12pt font, standard margins. It's a planning number, not a guarantee.
Reading time — Based on 250 words per minute, the widely cited average silent reading speed for adults. Useful for blog posts, article introductions, and anywhere you want to set reader expectations.
Speaking time — Based on 130 words per minute, the typical pace of a clear conference presentation or podcast. Faster than this, and listeners start to struggle. Use this when preparing talks, pitches, or scripts.
Readability scores try to predict how easy your text is to understand. This tool uses two of the most established formulas.
Flesch Reading Ease runs from 0 to 100. Higher is easier to read. Here's what the ranges mean in practice:
90–100 is Very Easy — roughly a 5th-grade level. Think simple instructions, children's content, and some viral social posts. 70–80 is Fairly Easy — most people can read this comfortably. 60–70 is Standard — newspapers, general blog posts, and product descriptions typically land here. 50–60 is Fairly Difficult — more demanding, but still accessible to a general adult reader. Below 50 is Difficult — academic papers, legal documents, and technical writing routinely score here. Below 30 is Very Difficult — specialized professional content.
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level converts the same math into a U.S. school grade. A score of 8 means a typical eighth-grader could follow the text. Most bestselling novels aim for grade 6–8. Most marketing copy targets grade 6 or lower. Academic work routinely lands at grade 14–18. The grade level doesn't measure quality — it measures accessibility. Hemingway famously wrote at grade 4. Legal contracts routinely hit grade 18. The right grade level depends entirely on your audience.
Neither score is prescriptive. A high grade level isn't a failure; it might mean your audience is specialists who expect technical language. A low grade level isn't dumbing down; it often means your writing is direct and efficient.
Every major platform enforces its own limits, and they're quite different from each other. The social limits panel in this tool shows your live character count against each limit as you type:
Twitter / X caps posts at 280 characters. This is the tightest limit for public text — every character counts. Spaces, punctuation, and even line breaks all count toward the limit.
Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters, but only the first 125 characters show before the "more" truncation. Write your most important content first.
LinkedIn posts allow up to 3,000 characters for standard posts. This is the most generous of the short-form platforms.
Meta ad headlines are limited to 40 characters — the tightest constraint in paid advertising. Every word has to earn its place. Over-limit copy is rejected at submission time, so it's worth checking before you log in to Ads Manager.
YouTube descriptions allow up to 5,000 characters, but search engines and the YouTube interface typically show only the first 100–150 characters before truncation. The first two sentences matter most for click-through.
SMS segments are 160 characters for standard GSM messages. Go over, and your message splits into multiple segments — each billed separately on some carriers. If you're writing SMS marketing copy, staying under 160 is important for cost control.
The bar under each platform turns amber as you approach 80% of the limit and red when you exceed it. The character count shows how many characters you've used out of the maximum.
A few principles for getting real value out of these metrics:
Don't optimise for a target number — optimise for the reader. Word count matters because length affects reader behavior, not because some number is inherently correct. A 1,500-word article that completely answers a question outperforms a padded 2,500-word article that buries the answer in filler. Use word count to check that you've said enough, not to hit a quota.
Use reading time as a communication tool. Adding "4-minute read" to the top of a blog post sets expectations and has been shown to reduce bounce rates. This tool gives you that number automatically — round to the nearest minute and include it in your post introduction.
Watch your average sentence length. If your average words-per-sentence is consistently above 25, look for run-on sentences that could split into two. Long sentences aren't wrong — some ideas require length — but a consistent pattern of long sentences fatigues readers without them realizing why.
Use keyword frequency as a sanity check, not a target. If your primary topic word appears only once in a 1,500-word article, you may have drifted off-topic. If it appears 40 times, you've over-optimised and the text will read awkwardly. The 1–2% range is a rough guide for your main keyword, with secondary terms appearing less frequently. Check character counts before you publish, not after. Catching that your Meta ad headline is 43 characters here takes two seconds. Finding out after you've spent 20 minutes in Ads Manager setting up the campaign costs you time and frustration.

Readability scores use the Flesch and Flesch-Kincaid formulas, which calculate average sentence length (words per sentence) and average word complexity (syllables per word). Syllables are estimated using a standard English heuristic — counting vowel groups with adjustments for silent letters. The estimates are accurate enough for meaningful guidance but not clinically precise.
