A Pictionary phrase generator is a free online tool that produces random multi-word expressions, idioms, and sayings for use in Pictionary-style drawing games. Instead of giving you a single word to draw, it gives you a phrase — like "raining cats and dogs," "break the ice," or "piece of cake" — that you must sketch without using any letters, numbers, or spoken clues.
This tool removes the need for physical cards, custom lists, or anything prepared in advance. Open it on any device, choose your settings, and generate a fresh set of phrases in seconds. It works equally well for living room game nights, classroom vocabulary games, office team-building events, and remote video-call sessions where one player shares their screen.
The generator includes a built-in round timer, a save feature for your favorite phrases, and filters for difficulty and category — so you can tune the experience to your group in just a few taps.
Pictionary Phrase vs. Pictionary Word: What's the Difference?
The core difference is complexity. A single word like "dog" or "bicycle" points to one clear object — most players can sketch it quickly and guessers recognize it fast. A phrase like "walking on thin ice" or "elephant in the room" describes a concept or situation that has no single image. The drawer must figure out how to translate an idea into visual clues, and guessers must think beyond what they literally see.
Pictionary Words
Single, concrete objects
Easy to sketch directly
Faster rounds
Better for kids and beginners
Example: "Bicycle," "Penguin," "Pizza"
Pictionary Phrases
Multi-word expressions or idioms
Abstract, metaphorical concepts
Requires creative interpretation
Better for adults and advanced players
Example: "Bite the bullet," "Couch potato," "Hit the road"
Phrases reward players who think laterally. To draw "bite the bullet," you might sketch a person biting an actual bullet — strange enough to spark recognition. To draw "let the cat out of the bag," a literal cat escaping a bag gets the point across perfectly. That gap between literal image and figurative meaning is what makes phrase Pictionary so entertaining and replayable.
Why Use a Pictionary Phrase Generator?
Even if your group has played Pictionary for years, phrase rounds can make the game feel completely new. Here is why this tool is worth adding to your game night rotation:
No cards to prepare. Physical Pictionary sets have a fixed number of cards. They run out, they get lost, and they repeat. This generator has hundreds of phrases available instantly.
Difficulty tiers prevent mismatches. Use Easy phrases with casual groups or mixed ages. Step up to Hard for competitive adults or teams that want a real challenge.
Category filters shape the mood. Filter to Animals for a lighter round, Idioms for a language-learning session, or Funny for maximum chaos at a party.
No repeat frustration. The generator tracks which phrases have already appeared in your session and avoids reusing them until you reset.
Works for remote play. One player shares their screen. The drawer uses the Hide button so only they see the phrase — then hits Reveal when the round ends.
Great for ESL learners. Idioms and expressions are notoriously hard to learn from a dictionary. Drawing them — and guessing what teammates draw — builds intuitive understanding of figurative language in a way that sticks.
Saves your favorites. Click the heart on any phrase to save it. Build a curated list for a themed round, then copy the whole set to share with your group.
How It Works
Choose how many phrases you want per round (1 to 10). Five is a good starting point for most groups.
Pick a difficulty. Easy phrases have more visual elements and are simpler to convey. Medium phrases are common idioms most players recognize. Hard phrases are abstract expressions that require real creative thinking.
Select a category (or leave it on All). Categories include Classic, Idioms, Actions, Animals, Food, Places, and Funny.
Click Generate. A fresh set of phrases appears immediately, each showing the category and difficulty level.
Show the phrase to the drawer only. On a shared device, use the Hide button so the phrase is blurred for spectators. On a remote call, the drawer sees their own screen.
Start the timer. The built-in countdown runs for 30, 60, or 90 seconds — standard Pictionary uses 60 seconds.
Draw, guess, score. The drawer sketches while teammates guess. A correct guess before time runs out earns one point. The next player on the opposing team takes a turn.
Best Practices for Playing Pictionary with Phrases
A few small adjustments make phrase rounds run much more smoothly than jumping straight in:
Start with Easy on the first round. Let players get comfortable with the phrase format before jumping to idioms. Easy phrases like "walk the dog" or "catch a fish" are close enough to single words to feel familiar.
Allow drawing separate parts. Tell players they can draw each word in a phrase separately and let guessers piece it together. This is especially useful for idioms where the whole phrase is harder to represent than its components.
Use the timer strategically. Sixty seconds is standard. For hard idiom rounds with new players, 90 seconds gives extra thinking time without killing the energy.
Mix categories for variety. Run one round on Animals, one on Food, one on Funny. The category shifts keep the game unpredictable.
Save your best phrases. When a phrase produces a hilarious or clever drawing, save it. Your group will want to replay those moments.
Use Idioms mode for language learners. If you are playing with non-native English speakers, run a pure Idioms category round and allow discussion after each guess about what the phrase actually means. The game doubles as a vocabulary lesson.
How to Manage Your Phrase List
The generator keeps everything simple so you can focus on playing rather than managing a list:
Saving a phrase: Click the heart button on any phrase card to add it to your saved list at the bottom of the tool. Saved phrases persist as you keep generating.
Regenerating freely: Hit Generate as many times as you like. Saved phrases are not affected — only the active round changes.
Avoiding repeats: The tool tracks every phrase that has appeared in your current session. Click Reset repeats if you want to start the pool fresh from the beginning.
Copying your list: Use Copy list to grab all current phrases to your clipboard, or Copy saved to grab only your saved set. Paste it into a group chat for asynchronous or remote play.
Hiding phrases for multi-player: On a shared screen, use Hide phrases before handing the device to the drawer. All phrases blur until Reveal words is clicked after the round ends.
Printing cards: Use Print cards to send a print-friendly version to your printer. The controls and saved panel are hidden; only the phrase cards remain.
Clearing saved phrases: Hit Clear saved to empty your list and start building a fresh one for the next game.
Pictionary Phrase FAQs
What is the difference between Pictionary phrases and Pictionary words?
Words are single, concrete items that are easy to draw directly — like "dog" or "piano." Phrases are multi-word expressions, often idioms, that require drawing an abstract concept. "Bite the bullet" or "raining cats and dogs" have no single image — the drawer must think creatively about how to suggest the meaning visually.
Are the phrases suitable for kids?
The Easy category includes many accessible phrases — "walk the dog," "ride a bike," "catch a fish" — that work well for older children. Idiom categories are better suited to adults or teens familiar with figurative language. For younger kids, the Pictionary Word Generator is a better starting point.
How do I play Pictionary with phrases instead of words?
The rules are identical to standard Pictionary. Generate a phrase, show it only to the drawer, start the timer, and let the drawing begin. No letters, numbers, or talking allowed. A correct guess before time runs out earns a point. Many groups allow drawing each word separately and letting guessers piece together the full phrase.
Can I use this for remote or online Pictionary games?
Yes. The drawer opens the generator on their own screen so only they see the phrase. They draw in a shared whiteboard tool (Google Jamboard, Skribbl.io, or even a plain screen share of a drawing app) while teammates in a video call try to guess. The Hide button on a shared device keeps the phrase private during in-person play.
What does difficulty mean for phrases?
Easy phrases are more literal or action-based — "ride a bike" and "catch a fish" are close to things you can directly sketch. Medium phrases are common idioms that most adult players recognize, like "hit the road" or "couch potato." Hard phrases are abstract expressions — "beat around the bush," "elephant in the room," "burning bridges" — that require inventive visual thinking to convey.
How many phrases are in the database?
The generator includes over 150 phrases across all categories and difficulty levels, covering Classic, Idioms, Actions, Animals, Food, Places, and Funny. The session tracker prevents repeats until you reset, so even in long sessions you won't see the same phrase twice.
Can I filter by category?
Yes. Use the Category dropdown to restrict phrases to Classic, Idioms, Actions, Animals, Food, Places, or Funny. Combine category and difficulty filters to build exactly the kind of round you want — for example, Easy Animals for a lighter game or Hard Idioms for a challenging vocabulary session.
Is this tool free?
Completely free. No sign-up, no account, no download. Open it in any browser on any device and start generating phrases immediately.
