Classroom spelling bees need word lists. Here's one that covers every grade from kindergarten through 8th.
Word difficulty is genuinely hard to standardize — what's challenging in one school is review in another, depending on curriculum and region. These lists are a practical starting point, not a fixed standard. Pull from them freely, skip words that are too easy or too hard for your group, and add your own.
Standard format: Read the word, use it in a sentence, offer to repeat the word and sentence once more. Don't offer the definition unless your rules allow it — some competitions do, most school bees don't.
Handling disputes: Have a judge's copy ready with accepted alternate spellings (color/colour, organize/organise). Decide in advance whether alternate regional spellings count. Announce your decision before the bee starts so there's no confusion mid-round.
Elimination rounds: For large groups (20+), start with Grade-level words for the first 2–3 rounds to thin the field, then shift to the next grade up. It moves faster than starting hard.
Pronunciation notes: A few words here have tricky pronunciations that affect spelling. "Acquiesce" (ak-wee-ESS) is commonly mispronounced, which leads to misspelling. Read each word clearly and at normal speed — not overly slow, which can distort vowel sounds.
