What is Christmas Charades?

Christmas Charades is the classic silent-acting party game dressed up for the holiday season. One player draws a Christmas-themed word or phrase — a movie, a carol, a tradition, a festive food — and acts it out without making a single sound while their teammates race to guess correctly before the timer runs out. No props, no screens, no talking. Just gestures, mime, and a lot of laughing at the person trying to act out "Bûche de Noël."

The game scales beautifully. Two people can play across a kitchen table on Christmas morning. Thirty relatives can split into teams for Christmas Eve. A classroom of kids can run it with the teacher generating words round by round on the board. All you need is a word list and someone willing to look slightly ridiculous — which this generator handles for free in one click.

How to Play Christmas Charades

1. Click Generate Christmas Words to get your round of holiday prompts.
2. The actor reads their word silently — other players must not see the screen. Use Hide Words so each card stays blurred until the actor taps it.
3. Set the Round Timer to 60 seconds for standard rounds, 90 seconds for harder words or songs, and 30 seconds if you want a chaotic speed round.
4. Start the timer. The actor can gesture, mime, point at body parts, and use facial expressions — but no sounds, no mouthing words, no pointing at objects in the room.
5. If teammates guess correctly before time runs out, the team scores a point. If not, no point is awarded.
6. Rotate actors and repeat. Use Save to bookmark a word for a future round without losing it between generates.
7. Click Reset repeats if you want the generator to recycle words from earlier in the session.

Christmas Charades Tips and Best Practices

• Mix categories for variety — Leaving it on "All Christmas categories" means a movie might follow a food followed by a carol. The unpredictability keeps guessers sharp and rounds interesting.
• Use Kids mode with younger players — Kids mode locks the generator to Easy difficulty. International Santas, obscure films, and hard-to-mime traditions stay out of rotation until players are ready.
• Songs need more time — Mime-acting a carol without humming is genuinely hard. Give song rounds 90 seconds rather than 60. Alternatively, play a music-only variant where players can hum but not sing words.
• Use standard charades signals — Hold up fingers for the number of words in the phrase. Cup your ear for "sounds like." Tap your nose when someone's close. Touch your wrist to signal urgency. These signals are especially useful for long Christmas phrases like "Twelve Days of Christmas" or "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."
• Hide Words before passing the device — Hit Hide Words before handing the phone or laptop to the actor. They tap their card to reveal only their word, keeping all other cards blurred for the guessers.
