How to generate a word scramble

Type any word into the Scramble tab and press Enter — or click the Scramble button — and the word scramble generator instantly rearranges the letters in a random order. The result appears large and spaced out so the jumbled letters are easy to read. Click Re-scramble to shuffle the same word again and get a different arrangement; the tool guarantees a different order each time (or tells you if no alternative exists, as with words like "aaa").

Generating word scrambles is useful in more situations than you'd expect. Creating puzzles for friends, making warm-up activities for spelling tests, generating prompts for word games like Wordle or Boggle, or building escape-room clues — all of these start with a cleanly scrambled word. Use the Re-scramble button until you find an arrangement that looks satisfyingly cryptic.

Need to find words hiding inside a jumbled set of letters? Visit our dedicated Word Unscramble tool — enter up to 15 letters, use ? for blank tiles, and filter results by length, starting letter, or ending. Works for Scrabble, Words With Friends, and classroom word jumbles.

Word scramble worksheet generator

The Worksheet tab is built for teachers and educators who need a print-ready word scramble in under a minute. Paste your word list — one word per line, up to 30 words — and click Generate Worksheet. The tool scrambles each word and lays them out in a clean two-column format: scrambled word on the left, blank answer line on the right.

This is the fastest way to create word scrambles free for any subject or grade level — no account, no subscription, no watermarks. Click the Print button to open your browser's print dialog and send it straight to your printer or save it as a PDF. Works for spelling tests, vocabulary practice, science units, history lessons — any topic where you have a list of words students need to learn.

The word scramble worksheet generator includes two optional sections: a word bank (all original words listed in random order at the bottom of the sheet, for students who need a hint) and an answer key (scrambled word = original word, useful for self-marking or teacher reference). Both are on by default; uncheck either one if you don't need it. As a word scramble maker for teachers, this tool is designed to eliminate prep time — paste your list, generate, and print.

Keeping the first letter (for younger students)

The "Keep first letter" scramble style is designed for early readers and younger grades. Instead of rearranging every letter, it leaves the first letter in place and only shuffles the remaining ones. So "volcano" might become "vaclono" instead of "cnooval." Students can use the starting letter as a cue, which makes the activity challenging enough to require thought while remaining achievable for beginners. This is ideal for K–3 spelling practice, reading groups, and any class where the full scramble would be too discouraging.

Frequently asked questions

What is a word scramble?
A word scramble is a tool that randomly rearranges letters to create jumbled versions of words — or works in reverse, taking scrambled letters and finding all the real words hidden inside them. Both directions are useful: scrambling creates puzzles and classroom activities, while unscrambling helps with word games like Scrabble, Words With Friends, and classroom jumble exercises. This tool combines both in one place, and adds a worksheet generator for teachers.
How do I make a word scramble worksheet for my class?
Click the Worksheet tab, then paste your word list into the text area — one word per line, up to 30 words. Give the worksheet a title if you like, then choose whether to include a word bank (helpful for struggling students) and an answer key (useful for self-marking). Pick a scramble style: "All letters shuffled" for a harder challenge, or "Keep first letter" for younger students. Click Generate Worksheet, check the preview, and press Print to open your browser's print dialog. No sign-up, no cost, no watermarks.

What does "keep first letter" mean in the worksheet?
The "Keep first letter" option scrambles only the letters after the first one, leaving the opening letter in place. For example, "science" might become "sieecnc" rather than "ieccnes." The visible first letter gives younger or less-confident students a meaningful starting clue, making the activity appropriately challenging rather than overwhelming. This mode works well for early readers (grades K–3) and for vocabulary practice where the goal is letter-order recognition rather than cold recall.
