How to make a word search

  1. Enter your words — type them in the box, one per line, or click a theme button to load a preset list. You can edit preset words freely.
  2. Choose a grid size — 10×10 for short word lists (up to 10 words), 15×15 for standard classroom puzzles, 20×20 for longer lists or harder puzzles.
  3. Pick word directions — horizontal only is easiest (good for grades K–2), all directions is hardest (good for older students and adults).
  4. Click Generate — your puzzle is built instantly. Click Generate again to shuffle the layout and get a different arrangement.
  5. Print or download — use the Print button for a clean, watermark-free printout. Use Download PNG to save an image file to share digitally.

Tips for good word search puzzles

Keep words between 4 and 10 letters for the best balance of challenge and findability. Very short words (2–3 letters) appear accidentally in the filler letters and frustrate solvers. Very long words on a small grid may not place. For a classroom puzzle, 10–15 words on a 15×15 grid is the sweet spot.

Use the answer key toggle to check word placement before printing. Click any word in the list below the grid to highlight just that word — useful for checking or for hinting to a stuck student without revealing everything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a word search?

Type your words into the box (one per line), choose a grid size and word direction, then click Generate. Your puzzle is ready instantly — no account, no download needed. Click Print for a clean, printable version.

Can I print without a watermark?

Yes — completely free, no watermarks, no sign-up. Click the Print button and your browser's print dialog opens showing just the puzzle grid and word list. Save it as a PDF or print directly to paper.

Why are some of my words missing from the puzzle?

Words longer than the grid size can't be placed. On a 10×10 grid, words with more than 10 letters won't fit. Switch to a 15×15 or 20×20 grid, or shorten the word. Unplaced words are shown with a dashed border in the word list.

Does this work on Chromebooks and tablets?

Yes. The generator runs entirely in the browser — no app, no plugin, no installation. It works on Chromebooks, iPads, Android tablets, and any desktop browser. The puzzle generates and prints from any of these devices.
